Pupillage 2027

From 24 November 2025, our pupillage advertisement for a September 2027 start will be available on the Pupillage Gateway.

The application window will run from 5 January 2026 until 11.59pm on 22 January 2026.
After the deadline, the Pupillage Committee will begin shortlisting candidates for first-round interviews, and all applicants will be notified via the Gateway.

Pupillage at Civitas Chambers

Pupillage at Civitas Chambers offers an exceptional foundation for building a strong and successful practice in civil and public law. We invest fully in those we recruit, offering pupillage only to candidates we regard as prospective tenants. From the outset, pupils are welcomed as future colleagues and supported to develop the skills, experience and confidence needed for a thriving career at the Bar.

During your 12 months with us, you will work closely with experienced practitioners across our core areas of expertise. Pupils are usually supervised by two pupil supervisors over the course of the year, ensuring continuity of support and structured progression. In addition to working closely with their supervisors, pupils have opportunities to shadow other members of Chambers to gain exposure to a broad range of work across our civil and public law practice areas. You will observe hearings, mediations and conferences, assist with drafting and research, and gradually progress to taking on your own work during your second six. Our supportive and collegiate culture ensures that pupils are able to learn, ask questions and grow as advocates in a constructive environment.

Pupillage Award

Pupils receive a total guaranteed income of £32,000 over the course of their 12-month pupillage:

  • First six months: a grant of £12,000, paid in equal monthly instalments.
  • Second six months: when in practice and earning fees, Chambers guarantees an income of £20,000 across the period.

In addition, Chambers reimburses pupils for reasonable travel expenses incurred for pupillage activities, along with the cost of required training courses.
(Travel incurred for a pupil’s own practice during the second six is not reimbursed, in accordance with professional guidance.)

Our Commitment to Fairness, Equality and Opportunity

Civitas Chambers complies fully with all Bar Standards Board requirements for pupillage. We are committed to fairness, transparency and the promotion of equality, diversity and social mobility at every stage of our recruitment process. We aim to develop the future of the Bar by offering opportunities to talented individuals from all backgrounds.
